Ha'aretz editorial
Thanks to everyone who has written in past several days. I will be responding to some of those letters to me in next several days after I get past immediate journalistic deadline. It is gratifying to see this discussion forum catching on. In the meantime, please check out this editorial from today's Ha'aretz. Why am I posting it here? Because it is an important statement from the most eloquent representative of the Israeli peace camp of outrage at the grotesque travesty of Holocaust denial and calls for Israel's destruction coming out of Teheran and a call for all Israelis, Jews and lovers of justice, left and right, to unite against the threat from Iran. Secondly, it is worth considering for all those here who are convinced that the peace camp is weak and will not stand up for Israel's security and basic interests. To believe we have to reach a solution that accords basic justice to the Palestinians does not mean one will not stand up for Israel's honor and security.

Saw the article. Of more interest is the discussion that follows, full of pearls like "Israel is paying a high price for Judea and Samaria" [in Iranian disapproval] and "when is Israel going to make concrete moves toward letting Palestinians out of the prison they built for them" [never mind Oslo or Gaza]. We will never make our enemies into friends; the idea is to make them "inert" enemies -- with the stick AND the carrot (or, whip and cookie, in Russian parlance).
An Iranian on the discussion made a telling comment -- "Jews aren't the only smart people on this planet, you know." In a nutshell, raison d'etre of this whole mess: two and a half milennia of inferiority complex. Now if we could only ACT smart...
Another thought:
Peace activism is an attempt to turn public opinion against combat, right?
There are (at least) two sides to every combat, right?
If only one of these sides has a free forum of public opinion, that side is more likely to be influenced by peace activism, right?
So peace activism is, by definition, agitation AGAINST the more democratic side in a conflict. QED, right?
