Dear Locke,
Obama did not have to denounce anti-semite wright. Many did not denounce nazis and many do not denounce fashcist islam today. But as a Jew I feel an obligation to denounce the modern day incarnation of the evil that killed my great grandparents and over 6 million other Jews.
Please do not condone this gentlemen!

Dima,
Rev. Wright did not kill your great-grandparents or mine in the Holocaust and he is not the modern day incarnation of the Nazis either. Rather he ran a life-affirming church that brought hope and inspiration to thousands of residents of the mean streets of the south side of Chicago who might otherwise have been lost to drugs and violence. Wright is justifiably angry about how America treated blacks for 350 years, which in its own way is worthy of the name 'Holocaust'. He also has made comments that castigate Israel's treatment of the Palestinians, a people we have occupied and whose land we have colonized for 40 years. To say that does not make him an anti-Semite or a Nazi or a fascist. It makes him a teller of truths--though one who expresses himself somewhat harshly at times. It is a shame that you cannot see that not only Jews have been hurt in this world or have even an ounce (or miligram) of compassion for the African-American experience. We of all people, with our painful history, ought to be able to extend compassion to other peoples that have been hurt and persecuted.

A lot of people have a lot of anger. But anger doesn't excuse bad behavior, ridiculous lies, or even paranoia. We can understand Wright's anger until the cows come home. That doesn't mean that it can be accepted. Nor can Obama's sitting in Church for 20 years be written off. I have a feeling that if the situation were as follows, people wouldn't be so forgiving.
Say a successful Ashkenazi Jew runs for high office. The man is brilliant, liberal, pro-this and pro-that. However we find out that he has been going to the shul of Rabbi Goldberg every Shabbat. R' Goldberg is a Holocaust survivor, and lost all of his family there. R Goldberg never fails to give it to the goyim every Shabbat. He disses the goyim, never fails to come down on Palestinians, etc. Not such a hard thing to imagine. Who is going to forgive this guy for what Rabbi Goldberg said? Who is going to care why Rabbi Goldberg is angry? No one, absolutely no one. Our compassion will run out very very quickly in this case.
You gut suckerred my friend.
Obama finally realized what a pig this guy wright is and denounced him, meanwhile you were still polishing him up for the nobel peace price.
I think that makes me win this round :)
As such, I will be posting the next topic on the forum.
